Transforming a Steep Bank into an Aesthetic Commercial Landscape in Wellington

Project Overview

  • Client: Design Builders

  • Location: Brooklyn, Wellington

  • Project Duration: 4 days

  • Scope: Transformation of a dry, rocky, weed-covered bank into a visually appealing and low-maintenance garden.

In the world of landscape gardening, projects can range from simple maintenance tasks to large-scale transformations that require careful planning and expert consultation. This case study showcases our team's expertise in turning a challenging and unsightly area in Brooklyn, Wellington into a lush, beautiful landscape for Design Builders, a company known for its architectural show homes.

Before the Project

Initial Condition

The site was a steep bank in Brooklyn, Wellington that was dry, rocky, and covered in weeds and invasive species such as gorse. This area was not only unusable but also a significant visual eyesore, detracting from the aesthetics of the surrounding environment.

Main Challenges

  • Terrain: The steep, loose gravel terrain made digging and planting difficult and required a solution that minimised future maintenance needs.

  • Climate: The bank was exposed to Wellington's harsh winds, rain, and intense sun, demanding careful plant selection.

  • Soil Quality: The soil was nutrient-poor, composed mainly of clay and rock, making it less than ideal for planting.

Client’s Vision

Design Builders wanted a fully planted bank with attractive, low-maintenance shrubs, grasses, and trees to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area. They required a garden design that would reflect the same level of elegance and beauty as their architectural show homes.

Specific Requests

The primary requirement was to create a visually appealing, low-maintenance landscape. Design Builders trusted our expertise to select the appropriate plants and develop a garden layout that would meet their needs.

During the Project

Project Details

The transformation involved planting 585 plants, ranging from small shrubs to larger trees, all selected for their resilience to Wellington's challenging climate. This soft landscaping approach ensured a vibrant and enduring landscape.

Featured Plants:

  • Northern Rata: Known for its striking red flowers.

  • Phormium Tenax (New Zealand Flax): A hardy plant that adds texture and colour.

  • Plagianthus Regius (Ribbonwood): Future standout trees that will provide structure and height.

One interesting aspect of the project was the use of coconut fibre matting. This material was used as a weed suppression mat, covering the area between plants and secured with biodegradable pins. This not only helped prevent weed growth but also contributed to soil stabilisation and moisture retention, crucial for the steep and exposed bank.

Innovative Techniques:

  • Coconut Fibre Matting: Laid across the entire slope to suppress weeds and aid in moisture retention.

  • Water Retention Crystals: Integrated into the soil to reduce the need for frequent watering.

  • Gypsum Clay Breaker: Used to improve soil aeration and enhance overall soil health.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Weather: Rain turned the bank into a slippery surface, complicating the planting process. Our team showed resilience and determination, donning wet weather gear and pushing through the elements to complete the job.

  • Matting Installation: Installing the coconut fibre matting on such a large scale was a major part of the job. We laid the matting flat before planting, cutting holes for each plant to ensure proper installation and growth.

After the Project

Transformation Description

We transformed a barren, weed-infested bank into a meticulously planned garden using a strategic planting layout. This transformation included the addition of various shrubs, grasses, and trees that were chosen for their ability to thrive in the challenging conditions of the site. This thoughtful garden development has made a lasting impact on the landscape.

Standout Features

One of the most remarkable features of the new garden is the Plagianthus Regius (Ribbonwoods), which are expected to grow into impressive trees that will stand out among the surrounding shrubbery, creating a dynamic visual experience. The careful selection of plants ensures that the area remains vibrant and engaging throughout the year.

Client Reaction

Design Builders were thoroughly impressed with the transformation, expressing their satisfaction with the work and the seamless execution of their vision. Their satisfaction was evident when they immediately contracted us for another similar project on the opposite side of the property.

Reflections

This project challenged our team's skills and showcased their ability to adapt and innovate in landscape gardening. Working on a near-vertical bank in the rain was no small feat, but the camaraderie and dedication of our team shone through.

Seeing the finished product after days of hard work was incredibly rewarding for the team. Transforming an unusable space into a beautiful, functional landscape is the reason many of our staff love their jobs. The satisfaction of planting the last plant and stepping back to see the transformed bank was a proud moment for everyone involved.

Our expertise in large-scale commercial gardening projects is demonstrated through our ability to tackle challenging terrains and deliver stunning results. We look forward to many more successful transformations and continuing to bring beauty and functionality to our clients' spaces.
